What is an Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

An employee assistance program (EAP) is an employee benefit program that assists employees with personal problems and/or work-related problems that may impact their job performancehealth, mental and emotional well-being. EAPs can generally offer free and confidential short-term counselling sessions for employees and their immediate household members.

It looks at issues which may be affecting their life, which in turn can affect their work performance and, by default, the productivity of the company.  It can help with the following:

  • Absenteeism

  • Time Management or Motivation

  • Managing Stress and anxiety

  • Problems between employees

  • Decrease in Morale

  • Communication

  • Redundancy

Why EAP?

An EAP can give your employees a way to cope with personal issues that an have a negative impact on their job performance, such as work-related stress or problems outside the workplace. With an EAP employees have access to a qualified and registered counsellor either in person or by telephone as necessary.  Employees are one of your most valuable resources.  When they are not working to full capacity, your business suffers.

How does it help you?

In particular small businesses often see benefits from EAP programs rapidly. Even though their staffing levels may be limited and they may not see the relevance to implement an EAP program, small business owner's bottom line can suffer quicker due to decreased performance and productivity and workplace negativity. The impact on a small company can cause severe damage if they do not seek effective measures to rectify such issues. An employer that invests in their staff by providing an effective EAP can help both themselves and employees by lowering risk and liability, help decrease workers' compensation claims whilst also improving employee satisfaction, and especially decreasing the stress small business owners experience when managing numerous responsibilities with little support.
